A Kevin Martin trade is being reported as "agreed to in principle" between the Sacramento Kings and Houston Rockets. The deal has Sacramento receiving superstar player Tracy McGrady from the Rockets as well as Carl Landry and Joey Dorsey. The Kings will get Martin, Sergio Rodriguez, Hilton Armstrong and Kenny Thomas in the trade. The Kings were reportedly unsure whether this would become a three team deal also involving the New York Knicks trying to get McGrady.
In a phone interview after the trade, Martin discussed sorrow over leaving his Sacramento team:
“It goes both ways,” Martin said by phone shortly after the trade. “Sacramento gave me an opportunity. I was a late first-round pick. I could have been playing overseas. I assumed they still loved me. I was the ‘Golden Child’ – that’s what Corliss Williamson used to say. I guess that’s the sad part.
“But it was time. I used to be the young guy playing with old guys. Now I’m the old guy playing with young guys. Let the young guys develop. I appreciate them letting me go to a playoff-caliber team at this time of my career.” (Source: Yahoo Sports)
Martin was informed of the trade by coach Paul Westphal at halftime of his latest game. He will now be reunited with former Kings coach Rick Adelman in Houston. Martin, a serious scoring threat from the Kings, is 27 and making $46 million over the next three years.
In addition to the possibility that Tracy McGrady could become a New York Knick, there's also talks of T-Mac joining a playoff contender like the LA Lakers or Cleveland Cavaliers. The Bulls had also expressed interested in T-Mac, but made a small trade of John Salmons to the Milwaukee Bucks instead. With the Kevin Martin trade by the Kings for McGrady, the Kings now receive a player with the potential to elevate them into the playoffs, although McGrady has suffered through injuries in repeated seasons.
