Of course, let's say it: he's only 22. Still the controversy over the Scotty Lago party pics that pretty much got him sent home ASAP just won't die.
The Scotty Lago party pics were publicized by TMZ. Certainly, there were somewhat risque, but hardly anything that bad. His fans don't really care, as he's getting a hero's welcome back in the states, after returning from Vancouver, BC, earlier than expected.
Naturally, the USOC would definitely want its medalists to remain upstanding citizens and behave well in public, particularly right after winning a medal (Lago won Bronze in half pipe). When something like the Scotty Lago party pics show up, you can expect a quick reaction (remember the flap over Michael Phelps and his 'bong hit' photo?).
Still, Lago says he left on his own. He indicated that he hadn't been asked to leave, but decided it was a good idea. Certainly, there was a high probability that the Scotty Lago party pics might have led to an ouster anyway.
Scotty Lago said, regarding the party pics:
"I am definitely sorry for what's happened because it was a lapse of judgment at the time, but of course I was going to go party afterwards. I had been living a sober life leading up to it for months, and I had just won an Olympic medal, so I was going to go celebrate.
"(Gold medalist Shaun White) was there, everyone was there from the Olympic team and we were just living in the moment, having a great time, and it's unfortunate that someone was looking to take me down for it. I mean, was there not a better story than that going on?"
Scotty Lago even thinks the party pics may have been set up:
"To be honest, I think I was set up, because that person gave TMZ those photos early in the morning, and obviously if someone was with us, having a good time, they're not going to leave immediately with a mind-set of 'Man, I need to go sell these! I really do think I was set up, but again, honestly, it's all good. I'm taking it as it goes."
It would be interesting to hear from the Asian woman at the center of the photo flap, but so far, there's been no ID made on her. At any rate, Scotty Lago can party all he wants now that he's back in the U.S., and probably will.END AKISMET -->
