The Chicago Bears were one of several teams looking to acquire free agent Julius Peppers. Now according to ESPN's John Clayton, the Chicago Bears Julius Peppers deal is official. Chicago reportedly has signed Peppers for six years in an agreement that could pay him $40 million over the first three years. Peppers had been searching for a deal with a team willing to pay at least $12 million per year.
Peppers at 6-foot-7, has been in the Pro Bowl five times now and had 10.5 sacks, 2 interceptions and five forced fumbles during his season last year in Carolina. The Bears are pleased to bring more defensive help to a team that made the Superbowl just a few years ago, yet lost to the Colts. During that season, the Bears won numerous games thanks to special teams, and defensive plays. Peppers would give the Bears even more speed and size on their defensive team.
Alex Brown, a current defensive end with the Bears called Peppers "as gifted as Brian Urlacher" only 30 pounds heavier, and "the biggest and fastest guy I think I've ever seen". Brown, speaking on an ESPN 1000 radio show said Peppers will help the team a lot.
The Bears also reportedly signed tight end Brandon Manumaleuna on Friday, with the stipulation he'd need to pass a required physical. Manumaleuna played his past four years for the Chargers, with five season before that for the Rams. He's mostly known for his defensive blocks on runs. Now that the Chicago Bears Julius Peppers and Manumaleuna deals appear to be finalized, the Bears can begin to focus on preparing for the upcoming season, getting back to the playoffs again, and maybe make another run at the Superbowl.
