Kevin Durant, arguably one of the best basketball players in the world, has decided to resign with the Oklahoma City Thunder. Â Durant was under contract for this coming year, but after that, would have been a free agent. Â Giant kudos to Oklahoma, for signing Durant early and avoiding a LeBron type free agent frenzy. Â Durant himself broke the news on his twitter account, just hours ago, saying "Exstension for 5 more years wit the #thunder....God Is Great, me and my family came a long way...I love yall man forreal, this a blessing!"
ESPN is reporting the contract is worth around $86 million over the five years, with the new contract kicking in with the 2011-2012 season.  Durant may well be the future of the NBA, and at just 21, is already the reigning NBA scoring leader.  If he played in a bigger market, you might hear his name more often in the Kobe vs. LeBron, who is better argument.  If you ask me, this is the biggest non-free agent signing in a long time.  If I could have one player for the next 7-10 years to build my team around, it would be Kevin Durant, no contest (feel free to call me crazy, but look at his stats first and remember he is just 21).  Plus, he just keeps getting better, who knows what his ceiling truly is?
Just an excellent move by the Thunder.  After an exciting playoff appearance this year with an incredibly young team, where they took the NBA Champion Lakers to 6 excruciating games, perhaps a bright future is now in store with Durant on-board for the long-term.  One thing is for sure, Oklahoma City fans must be beaming with pride today.
