2010 Open Championship leaderboard news is very interesting at the 2010 British Open. Â The 2010 Open Championship leaderboard has 21-year-old Rory McIlroy of Ireland leading the way after posting a record-breaking nine-under-par first round on Thursday. Â It was an extremely impressive round to begin play on the course, and McIlroy definitely benefited from some great weather that greeted the first golfers on the course Thursday. Â That weather turned rough later, with golfers that started in the later hours finding the course much less forgiving than those who had the early tee times.
Tiger Woods and John Daly were both able to take advantage of their early tee times, with Daly posting a six-under-par 66 and Woods shooting a five-under-par 67. Â That puts them both just a few shots back of the leader (McIlroy), and within striking distance as the tournament heads towards round two. Â On the opposite side of things was Phil Mickelson, who had to battle the late weather, and posted a one-over-par 73 during his first round on the course. Â With so many players posting scores well under par, that could have Mickelson sitting on the wrong side of the cut line on Friday night.
The big story on Thursday was Rory McIlroy though, a kid who grew up playing at the St. Andrews course in Scotland. Â He is extremely familiar with the course, and showed exactly what he could do when the weather cooperates. Â His 63 first round score was the best we have ever seen at an Open event, and gives him an early leg up on the rest of the field if the weather turns out to be nasty on Friday. Â If this was 2008 we would consider Woods an early favorite after his first round 67, but now we have to question if he can keep up the pace. Â The 2010 Open Championship already looks quite interesting, and should provide some great golf for the next three days.
