Oft-injured, yet talented Houston Rockets center Yao Ming is reportedly considering retiring from basketball after the upcoming NBA season. Yao has a nagging foot injury which sidelined Yao for the entire 2009-2010 season, requiring surgery which Yao is supposedly recovering well from.
Yao did not opt out of the final year of his contract this offseason and hopes to be able to play for the Rockets next year, sharing time at center with recently acquired free agent Brad Miller.
Yao’s contract will pay him about $17.7 million for next year, as the Rockets look to contend in 2010-2011. Having a healthy Yao, one of the game’s best and most unique centers when he’s on the floor, would go a long way to bolster Houston’s chances in an extremely competitive Western Conference.
However, in comments made to Chinese state media, Yao stated that he may not be able to play as many games as he would like for the Rockets and basically ruled out an appearance for the Chinese National Team at the 2012 London Olympics.
