Joel Northrup defaulted to Cassy Herkelman, giving her the win on Thursday. This sent the media and public into a frenzy. Joel Northrup is currently in the top 20 Google search results, all because he didn't want to fight a girl.
According to an article at Iowa State Daily, Northrup is a home-schooled sophomore who wrestles for Linn-Mar High School. Weighing in at 112 pounds, he faced an opening-round matchup with Herkelman, of Cedar Falls, in the state wrestling tournament.
Northrup defaulted the match, giving Herkelman the win, because he felt boys should not be in that situation with a girl. It is true wrestling can become violent, but Herkelman knows this just as much as Northrup, so why the big deal?
Although Joel Northrup may have had good intentions, it seems he has possibly done more harm than good. Herkelman earned her place in the tournament just as he did, so why devalue what she has accomplished?
Although Cassey Herkelman's family do not hold any grudge against Northrup, the young man is likely to come under fire in some way. Of course he probably would have faced the same amount of media attention had he competed against Herkelman, and injured her.
What were your thoughts on Joel Northrup defaulting the win to Cassey Herkelman?
