Milwaukee (36-28) moved to within 1.5 games of the St Louis Cardinals (38-27) after the Brewers used a dominating performance by pitcher Chris Narveson in a 8-0 victory over St Louis on Friday night.
Narverson (3-4) pitched eight scoreless innings and had six strikeouts as he won just his second career game against the Cardinals.
Nyjer Morgan and Ryan Braun both drove in two runs in the game, and Craig Counsell added three hits as the Brewers collected 11 total hits on the night. Milwaukee opened the scoring in the third inning as Narverson drove in the first run on a ground out and Morgan added a sacrifice fly as Milwaukee took a 2-0 lead.
Kyle Lohse (7-3) took the loss for the Red Birds as he allowed four earned runs in just five innings. Lohse has struggled in his career against Milwaukee and now has a 3-8 lifetime mark against the Brewers.
St. Louis will have Chris Carpenter (1-5) on the mound to face Zack Greinke (5-1) in the second game of the series tomorrow night. St. Louis entered Friday nights contest having won five of their last six games and will now need a strong performance tomorrow from Carpenter if they wish to keep up their lead in the NL Central.
