The Belmont Stakes 2011 winner results have become official. Fans tuned in for the exciting third race in the historic Triple Crown of thoroughbred racing. Many are now wondering who won the Belmont race, Animal Kingdom or Shackleford?
According to today's 2011 Belmont results, today's race was contested on a sloppy, wet, and muddy track in Belmont Park located in Elmont, New York. Animal Kingdom was the favorite after winning the Kentucky Derby, but Shackleford was also among the favorites as the winner of Preakness Stakes 2011. One of these two horses looked to win its second of three Triple Crown races. It was noted in pre-race conversation that a lot of late money was put on Shackleford. Nehro and Master of Hounds were also receiving betting action due to their odds.
At the Belmont race, Animal Kingdom almost lost its jockey, John Velasquez, out of the gates, with Shackleford in the front, leading by a length and a half. Animal Kingdom fell to dead last after the troublesome start to the race. Ruler on Ice, Stay Thirsty, and Santiva were among the early leaders behind Shackleford. Animal Kingdom made another late surge, but Ruler on Ice pulled off the shocking victory at the end. Ruler on Ice had 24 to 1 odds and certainly surprised Shackleford for the win!
This was certainly a stunning race in New York on a wet Saturday. The winner was followed by Stay Thirsty (16 to 1) at second, Brilliant Speed (10 to 1) in third, and Nehro in fourth place. Based on the final finish order, Shackleford was the winner between these two horses, finishing in fifth, while Animal Kingdom was sixth. However, neither can say they won Belmont Stakes 2011 nor the elusive Triple Crown. That possibility will have to wait another year for fans to speculate on for horse racing.
