The Floyd Mayweather sucker punch incident continues to be the talk of the town after Mayweather's win over Victor Ortiz this past Saturday. Broadcaster Larry Merchant recently spoke out about his post-fight interview with the victor, which was full of boos and angry responses.
Merchant noted in a recent interview with the Mason & Ireland show of 710 ESPN Radio that he believes Mayweather views him as a hater, basically not giving enough credit to Mayweather. Merchant added, "The fans saw what they saw: A sucker-punch ending a fight. Now, was Mayweather within his rights to throw it? Absolutely. Should he have? In my opinion, no. It was a legal blow, but that's not the way great champions do it. And the kid, Ortiz, has blame on him as well."
Merchant said that while he was interviewing Mayweather post-fight, Floyd was clearly noticing all the boos from the crowd. Merchant believes Mayweather took all that in and felt he was not going to get his proper respect that he deserves. From there, Mayweather called Merchant a name and Larry told Floyd, he would thrash the boxer if he "was 50 years younger."
Larry Merchant said if he had that interview back, he wouldn't change a thing. However, he admits he doesn't think he'd really be able to thrash Mayweather if it was 50 years ago. Good point Larry, that was way before Mayweather was even around to throw sucker punches! However, if Larry were 50 years younger than he is now and able to compete, would he even be able to go toe-to-toe? That question remains.
