A Fox Sports anchor in San Diego, CA has been suspended for a week for insulting Danica Patrick. Ross Shimabuku was discussing interview comments made by the female race driver about the media's perception of women in sports.
Apparently, she is upset by the fact that media has described her and other female sports professionals as "sexy." Stunned by the statement, likely because Danica has a history of using her sexuality to gain sponsorships, the news anchor commented that he had another word for her, one that "...starts with a 'B' and it is not Beautiful."
Danica took offense to the comment, which was later explained by Shimabuku to have been his perception of the way she carries herself. Although name-calling and insinuations like this on the air are certainly not acceptable, surely others are as stunned as Shimabuku was by Danica's statements.
Danica Patrick has faced extensive criticism for her racy marketing campaign with primary sponsor and internet hosting service GoDaddy. With commercials racy enough to be banned by CBS during the Super Bowl, perhaps there may be some understanding why Danica cannot get away from the "sexy" references. If she kept her clothes on and used her business sense to succeed instead of her figure, there may be other words that would be more suitable.
