New NBA trade rumors might indicate that a Deron Williams trade could come from the New Jersey Nets soon. If Dwight Howard decides to opt in to his contract and remain with the Orlando Magic, it will likely mean that the Nets can no longer acquire him as planned. That would lead to a domino effect where Williams could then choose to opt out of his deal rather than stay with New Jersey.
Writer Anthony Riccobono notes that this is where a big trade involving the LA Lakers could take place. New Jersey could potentially send Williams out to join Kobe Bryant and in return receive someone like power forward Pau Gasol. Having a tandem of Gasol and Brook Lopez in New Jersey could make that team really good on defense and provide quite a bit of offense in the low post as well.
New Jersey gave up a lot to get Williams in the first place as the team wants a marquee player when they move to Brooklyn during the offseason. That makes a Williams trade something that the franchise doesn't want to do, but if they get backed into the corner by a superstar who could simply opt out of his deal in a couple of months, a trade might be the best thing to do.
If Williams is definitely going to become available, then the New Jersey Nets need to put the word out so that they can get the best package possible in return. Maybe a trade with a surprising team could get concocted at the last minute. With the NBA trade deadline approaching on March 15 (at 3 p.m. ET), time is running out for a deal to get done.
Do you think that Dwight Howard will opt in to stay with the Orlando Magic or get traded before the deadline? Should Deron Williams ask to be traded rather than play out the season with the New Jersey Nets?
