The 2012 MLB season is about 1/4 of the way through and several surprising teams are playing terrific baseball, especially in the American League.
Tim Brown of Yahoo Sports has issued his latest rankings and while Texas is not a big shock at the top spot, Tampa bay and Baltimore are at numbers two and three.
The Rays have a good young pitching staff, but the offense had most experts believing that a run at a wild-card was possible, but Tampa Bay has played terrific baseball over the first six weeks and now look as the team to beat in the AL East.
Baltimore is the most surprising team in baseball, but the Orioles have some depth issues that could hurt this team later in the year. Baltimore does hold the top spot in the AL East and have a 13-7 record against teams in their division, but it is unrealistic to believe they will keep playing at a 14-5 pace on the road. While fans of the team are enjoying the early success, they have a similar situation as Cleveland had last year and come July, trades might be needed to add depth and keep this team in the running for the post-season.
The LA Dodgers are the top team in the National League and they have done so with great pitching and timely hitting. A 17-4 mark at home is the best in baseball, but how long can this team keep going with just two real power hitters?
The MLB season has over four months remaining in the regular season and while it's good for the game to have Baltimore and the LA Dodgers battling this early in the year for a playoff spot, depth and injuries will play a major role in their success for the rest of the year.
