Dwight Howard trade rumors have taken a serious step forward as the Orlando Magic and Los Angeles Lakers prepare for a meeting today (July 17). This is huge news, because it may mean that a deal could take place if the two sides can figure out what terms will work.
According to Marc J. Spears of Yahoo!, the LA Lakers really want a contract extension commitment from Howard before they will go through with any deal. That's understandable, especially if the Lakers have to give up significant assets in order to make the trade. The negotiations would certainly go much better if Howard made it known that he would agree to an extension if the two sides can come up with a trade.

In order for the Lakers to acquire Howard, they likely have to trade center Andrew Bynum in the process. It's still very unclear if Orlando wants Bynum though, especially because he also hasn't agreed to a contract extension. The worst case scenario for Orlando would be to trade for Bynum and then have him walk away after the next NBA season. The thought process here could also be that Orlando acquires Bynum only to flip him to another team right before the trade deadline.
While this could all turn into the same drama that killed the trade between the Brooklyn Nets and Orlando, it certainly seems like there is a lot of movement to finally get a deal done between the Magic and Lakers.
Do you think these new Dwight Howard trade rumors will lead to anything? How soon do you think the Orlando Magic and LA Lakers could come to terms on a deal like this?
