New Dwight Howard trade rumors have the All-Star center refusing to sign an extension with the Los Angeles Lakers or any other team. Contrary to earlier reports that Howard was interested in signing an extension with a few teams, he has instead had his agent make it very clear that he intends to test free agency.
According to ESPN, Dan Fegan (Howard's agent) stated that, "Dwight's position has remained unchanged since the end of this past season. He fully intends to explore free agency at the end of next season, regardless of what team trades for him, including Brooklyn." This is indeed shocking news, likely making the Orlando Magic suffer even more for not trading him before the deadline last year.
It sure seems like Howard and his agent have drawn a line in the sand where he will only really accept a trade to Brooklyn. Despite all the efforts that the LA Lakers have made to try to acquire Howard, it is his pride that continues to stand in the way of a deal getting done. Now Orlando may be stuck with a lame duck superstar that cannot wait until the day he signs with another team.
This might not stop Orlando from trading Howard, but it certainly harms the value of the players or picks they will get in return. This is where teams on the cusp could step up and gamble on one season of Howard. Maybe a team like the Portland Trail Blazers could show interest, because they could certainly use a center and they have a lot of draft picks they could offer.
What do you think about these latest Dwight Howard trade rumors? Do you think that the Orlando Magic will soon really regret not trading Howard last season? Does this news make you like Howard even less?
