Washington is entering the upcoming NFL season with a young backfield, and head coach Mike Shanahan is looking to add some experience. Dan Hanzus has reported that the Redskins are looking at Ryan Grant to add depth at running back.
The team added Roy Helu and Evan Royster in last year's draft, and both players made good contributions after starter Tim Hightower was lost with a knee injury, but with the team starting a rookie quarterback this year, adding a veteran who knows the league is becoming a priority.
The Redskins have a few options, but Grant fits the running style needed with the teams one-back sets. Despite limited success last year with the Green Bay Packers, the 29-year-old averaged 4.2 yards per carry and is a good enough receiver to give the team the experience and leadership they're looking for this season.
While the NFL has gone away from older backs, teams like Washington have too much youth, and that could actually hurt the Redskins this year. Grant could help the younger backs with the little things that are needed to succeed, and that could have the veteran in a Redskins uniform for the 2012-13 season.
