London Olympics 2012 Medal Tally So Far has Team USA among Leading Nations

The London Olympics 2012 medal tally has revealed several nations in the lead after a full day of competition. Currently, Team USA is among the top three teams along with China and Italy.

According to Yahoo! Sports, the United States are tied for second place with Italy, as both nations have achieved a total of five medals. However, Italy has 2 golds, while the U.S. has just one. Meanwhile, China has the early lead with six total medals, and 4 gold medals.

So how have the early United States medals been won? In Olympics archery, the men's team fell just one arrow short of winning the gold. Instead they achieved a silver medal, while Italy took the bigger prize. The first United States gold medal came as a result of Ryan Lochte, who defeated his U.S. teammate, Michael Phelps, in the 400 IM swimming event.

The US has achieved the bulk of its medals in swimming so far. In fact, the Women's 4x100m Freestyle Relay team captured bronze, while Peter Vanderkaay won a bronze in the Men's 400m Freestyle Finals. Elizabeth Beisel captured a silver for the Women's 400m Individual Medley Final. Team USA will look to win more golds as the events continue for the next several weeks.

In 2008, the Olympics were held in Beijing, and host country China bested the United States with 51 gold medals won, to Team USA's 36. Russia and Great Britain were in the third and fourth spots respectively. Of note, the United States won the most medals at those games, with 110. It appears these two nations, the U.S. and China, are going to be among the top of the medal tally leaderboard for this latest Olympics as well.

The host country, Great Britain, has yet to get involved in the London Olympics 2012 medal tally. Their count sits at zero medals so far, which has to be disappointing for the fans in the United Kingdom. Luckily, there are plenty of events remaining to get back into the hunt!
