At the end of Day 8 in the London Olympics 2012 medal tally, the United States has taken a slight lead in the overall Olympics medal count. Earlier in the day on August 3rd, Team USA and China were in a tie once again, but that has now changed.
The latest 2012 Olympics medal standings show Team USA now has 43 total medals to China's 42. Russia and Great Britain continue to hold on to the third and fourth spots, while Japan sits at fifth with 21 total medals. However, ranking teams by gold medals won shows the U.S. in first with 21 total gold medals, China in second with 20, and South Korea in third with 16 total golds. Great Britain, who has been hosting these Olympics has a total of 8 gold medals, which is tied with France's total.
For those wondering what sports the hosts are doing the best in, Great Britain has captured a majority of its total medals in, or on, the water. Four medals total have come combined from swimming, rowing, and the Men's Canoe Double race. Basically, the Brits are excelling on the water, although they have also captured two medals in Judo, with their other medal coming in the Men's Team Sprint Cycling.
It's going to be tough for Great Britain to catch up with the United States or China in terms of overall medals. However, with some strong performances through the remainder of the summer games they may be able to make a run at the #3 spot. So far they have proven to be classy and gracious hosts, so a top five finish seems more than likely.
As for Team USA and China, they'll continue their battle probably through the close of the Olympics in August 12th. The U.S. is looking to avenge its loss to China at Beijing, where the host nation won the most gold medals, even though the U.S. won the most overall medals.
Which nation do you think will finish with more overall medals, USA or China?
