With their third gold medals, won in the Olympic tennis 2012 doubles play, Venus and Serena Williams cemented their status as one of the best female tennis duos of all time. Added to their doubles gold, Serena also won a gold medal
in singles action the day before. With all their accolades, is there a female duo in tennis history that matches their greatness?
"We all talk about this, 'We have so many medals,' but to be able to add to that, it's like an unbelievable feeling," Venus said. "You know that in that count, there you are. It feels amazing."
Tennis returned to the Summer Olympics in 1988, after a 56-year absence. The United States have won the gold medals in seven of the eight Olympics games since its return. Gigi Fernández and Mary Joe Fernández won two gold medals, and with this Williams sisters victory, they now stand alone as the most decorated doubles partners in Olympic history.
Add in a singles gold medal for Venus in 2000 and Serena in 2012, and the sisters hold five gold medals. The sisters have also won 13 doubles Grand Slam titles. Serena has added 14 Grand Slam singles titles in 18 attempts while Venus has seven.
The recent gold medals just add to their domination of the sport. With their wins in the Olympic tennis 2012 competition, are the Williams sisters the best of all time?
