People often forget who anyone but the head coach on championship teams but Patriot fans aren't likely to brain fart on the name Romeo Crennel. The 65-year-old from Lynchburg, Virginia is one of the best defensive minds in football and it was his complex schemes that helped New England win three Super Bowls. Bill Belichick hasn't won a ring since Crennel left to become the head coach in Cleveland. Though that job fell through, the old man has new work with the Kansas City Chiefs. His defense features one of the most balanced, versatile rosters in the NFL, players Belichick would kill to have on his team. The one issue is those players became who they were under Crennel and made it clear they believe in him and love playing for him. So if the Patriots want some love from their old friend they'll need some serious bait to give their defense another boost.

The crazy thing about a Patriots-Chiefs deal is that the two sides are almost interchangeable in their style. After all, Scott Pioli was general manager for New England before he took over in Kansas City. The big fish the Patriots likely will unload before free agency next season is All-Pro receiver Wes Welker. On the flip side the Chiefs have their own problems with Pro Bowl talent Dwayne Bowe. Early thoughts point at a simple exchange of the players but that isn't practical for both because it doesn't solve the contract problems and would become largely one-sided. Bowe is only 27 and entering his prime. As good as Welker is, he turned 31 in May. So if the Patriots wanted Bowe they would need something more than that. Two names name that could tip the scales in their favor are Ryan Mallett and Brian Hoyer. In the limited time the two backups to Tom Brady have seen the field they have played very well. Kansas City isn't set on sticking with their own starter Matt Cassel and could create some competition with either Hoyer or Mallett on the team.
The New England Patriots are better off with Wes Welker but they don't really need him. He is too valuable to let reach free agency. A team like the Kansas City Chiefs have connections to Foxborough and the kind of trade bait Bill Belichick would want. It's not a no-brainer but it could work more than other place.
