Josh Smith trade rumors may surface now that the Atlanta Hawks have failed to acquire Dwight Howard from the Orlando Magic. A trade that would bring Howard to Atlanta was always considered a long-shot, but all that hope went out the window when the LA Lakers swooped in and made an offer that apparently Orlando was happy with.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution admitted that the Hawks didn't stand much of a chance going up against the Lakers in any trade scenario. Not just because of the talent getting exchanged, but because the Lakers always seem to get their man. The only exception to that (ever) was when the league vetoed a deal that would have sent Chris Paul to the Lakers this past offseason.
The risk involved in trading for Howard was that Smith is going to become a free agent at the end of the season. A scenario could have taken place where the Hawks traded away Al Horford to get Howard and then lost both star players for nothing in return. Now though, the team has to face the Smith situation again and decide what is best for the future of the franchise.
Josh Smith trade rumors are likely to surface now, especially if he is not dedicated to staying with the Atlanta Hawks. There are a number of teams out there that could use his size and energy, including the Phoenix Suns, Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks. Now everyone will get to see which teams turn into vultures that try to pry him out of Atlanta.
Do you think that Atlanta will trade Smith before the 2012-13 regular season begins? Does Atlanta have any chance at competing in the Eastern Conference after trading away Joe Johnson?
