Boston Red Sox trade rumors are developing that include Kelly Shoppach. According to the Boston Globe, Shoppach has cleared waivers, meaning he can now be traded to any team in baseball.
Putting Shoppach on waivers seems to indicate that the team wants to give Ryan Lavarnway more opportunities to play as the catcher down the stretch. Lavarnway is behind both Shoppach and Jarrod Saltalamacchia on the depth chart, meaning a move is probably necessary.
Shoppach has done all right in limited action this season, hitting .250 over 140 at-bats. He also has 19 extra base hits, showing that he could provide a little bit of pop off the bench for another contender. It's possible that a team like the San Francisco Giants could use him during the second half of the season. Other teams that might be interested include the Los Angeles Angels and Toronto Blue Jays.
The Red Sox likely can't get too much in return for Shoppach, but as the team continues to fade from contention in the American League East, it has become time to start dealing off more pieces. The team might also want to consider trading Saltalamacchia at this point as well.
What do you think about these Boston Red Sox trade rumors? Which team would be the best fit for Kelly Shoppach should he get traded?
