Melky Cabrera suspended for 50 games? That's right; Major League Baseball just came down with the huge suspension after it was determined that Cabrera had violated the Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.
According to ESPN, Cabrera tested positive for testosterone, leading to an immediate suspension by MLB. Testosterone is considered a PED (performance enhancing drug) and has thus been banned for use by players. Now everyone will wait to find out if Fed Ex delivered the sample correctly this time.
For once, though, a player actually admitted to using a substance rather than claiming he had no idea what was going on. Cabrera stated, "My positive test was the result of my use of a substance I should not have used. ... I am deeply sorry for my mistake." He already gets more respect than players like Ryan Braun and David Ortiz for that statement alone.
Cabrera had been putting up huge numbers for the San Francisco Giants this year, posting a .346 batting average that was second in the National league so far. He had also helped the Giants to a lead in the NL West and a nice 64-53 record, despite some struggles from other players on the roster. Now the Giants may have a tough time finding the offense to stay competitive.
What do you think about the news of Melky Cabrera getting suspended? Do you think he is in the same class as Andy Pettitte and Barry Bonds now?
