Things went past the crisis point for the Pittsburgh Steelers offensive line a while ago. After another bad injury the time may have come to find help. Could the Steel City call the Buffalo Bills about Kraig Urbik?
David DeCastro injury leaves Ben Roethlisberger more exposed
Left tackle was already a problem when the Steelers started their offseason. They had hoped drafting Ohio State tackle Mike Adams in the second round would ease the problem. Several whiff blocks and an injury later and Adams is an unknown heading towards the regular season. The biggest draft pick that would inject life into the Pittsburgh offensive line was right guard David DeCastro. A talent out of Stanford he got tagged as the best lineman in the draft. Sadly fans won't get to see his skills any time soon. The young guard tore the MCL ligament in his knee during a preseason game against the Buffalo Bills. He also slightly injured his ACL too. The joint problem could keep him out for over half the season and the Steelers have almost nobody to replace him. Unless another team releases an able veteran Pittsburgh faces a horrific gauntlet towards the 2012 playoffs their quarterback Ben Roethlisberger might not survive. Their choices are limited. They can either hope one of the players on the rosters steps up or they can field some phone calls for a trade. Ironically one team that might listen is the same team that knocked DeCastro out in the first place.
Urbik and Andy Levitre viewed as underrated piece to Bills offense
The Bills offense hasn't lit up the scoreboards all preseason. Most of the offseason got spent trying to improve the defense with big signings like defensive end Mario Williams. Fans though wonder if quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick can find the spark that made him an early Pro Bowl favorite last year before the team fell apart. Part of the problem is receivers. Outside of young Stevie Johnson Buffalo has a bunch of no-names fighting for roster spots at receiver. This puts more pressure on the running game of Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller. Two names that get overlooked for keeping the offense afloat are guards Andy Levitre and Kraig Urbik. Their pass protection is among the best in the league and both sit in a contract year. Each could hit free agency in February unless Buffalo does something about it. As the right guard Urbik is a player Pittsburgh would love to have. His addition next to Pro Bowl center Maurkice Pouncey could give Roethlisberger a clean pocket to throw from. In return the Steelers have many receiving weapons that would boost the Bills offense. Mike Wallace is the big name given his own contract issues.
Losing David DeCastro puts a big wrench into the Pittsburgh Steelers plans. Ben Roethlisberger drives that team just as much as the defense. Since the Buffalo Bills need targets but have capable guards like Kraig Urbik, a trade could benefit both teams moving forward.
