NFL offensive coordinators have transformed the way tight ends are used in the league and that has carried over to the game of fantasy football. The position was once a late round pick that had little impact on the game, but now several players in the league are a must-have on rosters and drafting a quality tight end can become the difference in winning a league title or missing out on the playoffs.
Here is an updated look at the top players in the game and how they can help fantasy football owners in the upcoming football season.
Jimmy Graham of the New Orleans Saints and Rob Gronkowski of New England are the top two tight ends in the game, but several more players can help owners looking for help.
Antonio Gates is healthy and the San Diego Chargers are looking for a big year from their veteran. Gates has good chemistry with quarterback Phillip Rivers and with the lack of depth the team has at wide receiver, Gates could produce a solid season for the Chargers this season.
Vernon Davis is another solid option for owners as the San Francisco 49ers tight end is big, fast, and has grown into one of the top players in the league. The 49ers are another team with limited depth at receiver and Davis has become the top option for quarterback Alex Smith.
A late round sleeper option is second year pro Lance Kendricks of the St Louis Rams. The youngster struggled early last season, but he and quarterback Sam Bradford have gotten off to a good start in the preseason and his size and speed makes for a good target in the red zone.
The NFL season is just around the corner and fantasy football owners are preparing for their draft or looking for depth off the waiver wire, in both cases these players should help the process and give owners the help they need to win a championship.
