The 2012 college football season got started on Thursday with 15 games and one postponed contest. South Carolina was the only ranked team in action and the Gamecocks rallied for a tough 17-13 win over Vanderbilt.
The Gamecocks scored the winning touchdown with just under three minutes left in the game as Marcus Lattimore scored on a one yard run. Both defenses played very well as neither team had over 300 yards in offense.
Arizona State opened their season with a convincing 63-6 win over Northern Arizona. The Sun Devils racked up 554 yards of offense, Quarterback Taylor Kelly went 15-19 for 248 yards and a score. Running back Marion Grice added 108 yards on the ground and three touchdowns as new head coach Todd Graham picked up his first win.
The last game of the evening went to Minnesota as the Golden Gophers escaped Las Vegas with a 30-27 win over UNLV in 3 OTs. Minnesota outgained the Rebels 478-275 yards, but UNLV hung tough all evening to put a big scare in the visiting Big 10 school.
The college football schedule continues on Friday with five games, including a top 25 matchup between Boise State at Michigan State. Both teams enter the contest with new quarterbacks, but a good group of players return for each school and the game should be one of the weekend's best.
