New NBA Lakers rumors for the 2012 season coming up have focused on whether or not Dwight Howard will be good to go for LA's opening game. Recent reports make it seem D-Howard is targeting the opening night after spending considerable time to rehab from his back surgery. If true, will he be able to contribute to the team's success early on, and will the team be able to gel early enough to get wins?
A new article from Bleacher Report gives some predicted stats for Howard in the early part of the upcoming season for Los Angeles. They believe he'll average about 35 minutes a game, 17 points, 13 rebounds, 2 blocks, a steal, and assist and four turnovers in his first-ever game wearing his new Lakers jersey. The article believes these sorts of stats will be well received by fans with Howard's first start in LA, if he does start. They also note he'll still be adjusting to playing with Pau Gasol, Steve Nash, and Kobe Bryant on the floor, as well as other new teammates.
The article also notes, "Don't be surprised to see Howard playing at an All-NBA level as soon as he returns and possibly putting together his finest season to date with the Lake Show." Honestly, the one stat where Howard might even benefit more is with assists. If he gets double teamed at all down in the paint, a simple pass out to someone at the three point line or closer who is wide open, can result in some easy shots for LA. He may even find Kobe and Nash to be his favorite targets ever as both have been known to make a jumpshot or two.
No matter what Howard contributes early on, this is going to be a process for the LA Lakers. They can't expect everyone to gel immediately, but once they start firing on all cylinders, it's going to be scary if this team is on the schedule for your favorite team.
