The Manti Te'o hoax is probably the weirdest story in the news today. The Notre Dame linebacker reportedly said his girlfriend, who he was with for a while but never saw, died of leukemia. But did she? Did she even exist?
The story is missing a lot of parts—especially concerning whether the girlfriend was a real person or not—but apparently another NFL player says that he met a girl by the same name in 2011. If this is the same girl, then at least one thing is clear: She's not dead.
Reagan Mauia, who played for the Arizona Cardinals, said that he met the supposed girlfriend of Manti, Lennay Kekua, when he was doing charity work in the American Samoa in 2011.
"This was before her and Manti. I don't think Manti was even in the picture, but she and I became good friends. We would talk off and on, just checking up on each other kind of thing. I am close to her family. When she was going through the loss of her father, I was—I offered a comforting shoulder and just someone to bounce her emotions off. That was just from meeting her in Samoa," he said.
If this is true then it makes the story even more confusing because it wouldn't make sense for Manti to say she died.
According to reports, Manti Te'o was introduced to his "girlfriend" by his cousin who supposedly made up the woman as a hoax. It's not clear if Manti was in on the hoax or not since he met the girl online and never was seen with her in public.
Are you as confused by this story as most people are? Do you think Manti's girlfriend ever existed? What will this do to his career if it turns out it was all one big hoax and he knew it?
